Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) has contaminated the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system at the Puchack Well Field Superfund Site located in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey. Chromium concentrations up to 5,700 μg/L have been observed in the site wells. The 80 acre plume is located beneath a mixed-use area consisting of private residences, businesses and light industry. In-situ geochemical fixation technology was selected as the remedy to reduce Cr~(6+) to Cr~(3+) to form a stable chromium/iron oxyhydroxide precipitate. A pilot study was performed using two reducing agents (potassium lactate and calcium polysulfide) that were found effective in achieving the treatment goals at the bench scale. The pilot study was performed to assess the bench scale study dosage rates for lactate (1 percent solution) and calcium polysulfide (0.1 percent solution), longevity and retardation of the reductants, removal rate of chromium, geochemical changes in the aquifer, and the effective radius of influence.
