This presentation describes a unique thermal application used at Dunn Field at the former Memphis Depot in Tennessee. The removal of eight high-concentration source zones by simultaneous thermal treatment was accomplished in 6 months – using one thermal system to cover all eight areas. Unit costs for applying in situ thermal desorption (ISTD) were below $80 per cubic yard treated. The removal of the source areas will facilitate transfer and reuse of the property under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Program. The eight separate source zones contained chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) in a tight loess (silt/clay) above the water table. Primary contaminants were PCE, TCE, and 1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane. The source areas were as much as 1,200 ft apart. A target volume of 49,950 cubic yards of subsurface material to a depth of 30 ft was treated in a period of 177 days.
