Ten Years of Remediation Progress at a Chlorinated Solvent Site in the Southeastern United States

This paper presents a case study describing remediation progress over a ten-year period at a chlorinated solvent site in the Southeastern United States. The former textile plant site has several acres of groundwater affected by tetrachloroethene (PCE) and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in concentrations ranging from over 100,000 ppb in the source area to less than 1 ppb at the edges of the plume. The groundwater plume extends north and south of the plant due to a groundwater divide near the plant, for a total of approximately 4,000 linear feet in length within a very heterogeneous subsurface that includes saprolite and fractured bedrock. Brown and Caldwell was retained after the Record of Decision (ROD) and prepared a remedial design, implemented a remedial action, negotiated a change to the selected remedy after monitoring showed the need for additional action, conducted additional investigations, and has implemented the first phase of the additional remedial action.
