A Protocol for Site-Specific Screening of In Situ Chemical Oxidation for Groundwater Remediation

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) has become a common remediation technology used for rapidly degrading organic contaminants in groundwater. Field applications of ISCO as well as research and development in chemical oxidation processes have yielded much information about the strengths and limitations of the technology, and a standard of practice for ISCO application has begun emerge. However, for applications of ISCO to specific sites, the methods and decision-making processes employed remain widely varied, and the results achieved at range from widely successful to falling short of expectations. In order to help improve upon decision-making for ISCO application, project ER-0623 was funded by the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) to develop guidance, protocols and decision support tools to help remediation professionals make more informed decisions during ISCO application and achieve better results. This research was performed by collaboration between the Colorado School of Mines, Clarkson University, CH2MHILL and the US Navy, and has culminated in the publication of an electronic CD containing site-specific engineering and technology application guidance, as well as a book describing ISCO principles and practices (in press).
