The United States Air Force performed simulation modeling for the Main Base Inactive Landfill (Site 3), located at Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), California, to evaluate the feasibility of remediation by enhanced attenuation (EA) by vertical hydraulic controls (capping) to address groundwater contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons. Site 3 is located in an area of shallow bedrock and low groundwater yield. Groundwater occurs in the bedrock fractures from 65 to 126 feet below ground surface. The maximum concentrations of the most prevalent VOCs include perchloroethene (19 μg/L), trichloroethene (29 μg/L) and vinyl chloride (15 μg/L). Both groundwater elevations and contaminant concentrations are highest in the center of the landfill, indicating stormwater infiltration may be transporting contaminants into the groundwater.
