Between 2003 and 2004, soil and groundwater sampling were conducted to assess the extent and origin of a perchlorate release to a sand and gravel aquifer at an Army Na- tional Guard training facility. The release area is adjacent to a site used for eight years as the launch pad for a small town's annual Fourth of July fireworks display. Surface soil sampling conducted downwind of the launch area before and after the July 5, 2003 fire- works event showed only trace concentrations (less than 10 ug/Kg) of perchlorate days prior to the event and concentrations at the same locations as high as 7 mg/Kg the day after the event. Five months later, soil samples collected from the locations with the highest perchlorate concentrations showed no detections of perchlorate. Samples of paper fireworks debris collected in the vicinity of the soil samples four months after the 2003 fireworks event showed perchlorate concentrations up to 34,000 mg/Kg. The fire- works debris was collected from the same area as the soil samples with the highest per- chlorate concentrations.
