Air Force Plant No. 4 located in Fort Worth, Texas is an active aircraft manufacturing facility. Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Company operates AFP4. During the 1990s the 30 to 40 year old Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) storage and distribution system had numerous leaks. AFFF is used to fight aircraft fires since it smothers fuel fires. AFFF is widely used at civilian and military airfields. Some AFFF formulations contain minor amounts of fluorosurfactants. The fluorosurfactants may degrade to daughter products that are persistent in the environment and may pose risks to aquatic life.
