Heterogeneity of soil characteristics and contaminant distribution are significant obstacles in the in-situ remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons. This heterogeneity can lead to ineffective distribution of injected substances, such as organic substrates for enhanced biodegradation, chemical oxidants, or zero valent iron (ZVI). This ultimately results in areas of untreated material, especially areas of low permeability on which the hydrocarbons have sorbed. This sorbed material often diffuses back in to the ground- water, creating a continuing source of chlorinated hydrocarbons and preventing reduc- tion of contaminant concentrations to project goals.
