摘要

Low-levels of mercury are present in the influent and effluent of a groundwater pump & treat treatment system that was installed to remediate volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Total mercury in the groundwater is on the order of 250 ng/L, which exceeds a recently promulgated limit of 51 ng/L for the receiving out- fall. A system that coupled chemical treatment with the existing air-stripping equipment was developed, tested, and deployed to cost-effectively treat the mercury. This system is based on transforming the mercury into a strippable elemental form using small amounts of stannous chloride. The necessary equipment was straightforward to implement and operate and demonstrated the ability to meet the mercury discharge limit. The process removes almost 95% of the mercury via the combination of chemical reduction and air stripping. Initial capital costs for the system are less than $5000 and the increase in operating costs are $0.17 per thousand gallons.
