Multiple distinct and converging “lines of evidence” have been used in recent years to evaluate natural attenuation. These lines of evidence encompass the different types of data that allow analysis of contaminant attenuation and degradation. In the 10 or so years since publication of the research for the material presented in the Technical Protocol for Evaluating Natural Attenuation of Chlorinated Solvents in Groundwater (USEPA, 1998, EPA/600/R-98/128), numerous advances have been made in the techniques used to evaluate the efficacy of natural attenuation. Data analysis techniques not discussed in USEPA (1998) fall into three categories. The first category involves determining the behavior of contaminant mass over both time and space and includes mass-in-place, center-of-mass, and mass-flux estimates.
