Four Case Studies of Enhanced Biodegradation of RDX, TNT, Chlorinated VOCs, and Freon-113 in Similar Geology Using Identical Carbon Amendment(Abstract)

Four treatability studies were completed in 2006 at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP). The uniqueness of these TSs is that they were executed in similar geology and with the same carbon amendment (high fructose corn syrup [HFSC]), but each site had different levels and combinations of contaminants. The contaminants for the TSs included Royal Demolition Explosive (RDX), TNT, Freon-113, and chlorinated volatile organic compounds, and each of the four sites were contaminated with one or more of these. At each of the four sites, a test area, approximately 50 ft by 50 ft in size was established, and a series of injections of corn syrup were performed. In May 2005, eight injection points were installed and injected at Site 1 (Line 9 – [Freon]), and nine injection points were installed and injected at each of Sites 2 through 4 (West Burn Pads [RDX], Fire Training Pit Area [chlorinated VOCs], and Line 800 [RDX and TNT]). In December 2005 and January 2006, new injection points were installed at Sites 1, 2, and 4 for a second round of injections – there was no second round of injections at Site 3 because the samples taken indicated that there was already sufficient carbon (in the form of toulene) in the groundwater.
