Rice is the primary source of calories for more than half the world's population (Baldwin 2001; Londo et al 2006; Song et al 2007). Besides being a staple food, it is also a major source of ingredients for processed food, animal feed and industrial raw material (Tomlinson and Denyer 2003; Zhou et al 2002). Rice plants that grow spontaneously and do not require cultivation are generally regarded as weeds or wild rices (Fitzgerald 2004; Steeves 1952). Both cultivated and wild rice are within the Ehrhartoideae subfamily of the Poaece family.
