The i-mode service has gained rapidly in popularity and it saw the number of users exceed 34 million in July 2002. In addition, the number of packets that the PDC-P (Personal Digital Cellular-mobile Packet data communication system [1]) processes for the i-mode service has increase. It has therefore become important to design the system so that it can cope with the increasing volume of packet data. This paper analyzes the characteristics of i-mode traffic, and discusses an appropriate congestion control mechanism, which has been adopted in the PDC_P system.
