F-16 Flutter Analysis With Kestrel

With increased pressures on budgets and no change in customer demand for stores clearances, modeling and simulation has to make up for the shortfalls in the future. Clearance of stores on lighter aircraft with nonlinear dynamic responses is particularly challenging. A prime example is stores clearance on the F-16 due to limit cycle oscillations (LCO) and a vast array of equipment that can be installed on the wings of the aircraft that alter the LCO behavior. While the physics that ultimately lead to LCO are not fully understood, the need for a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solution with a high order flow solver is desired. Due to the complexity of this type of modeling and simulation the basic solution types need to be fully comprehended. This is particularly true with dynamics solutions that can be counter intuitive on first examination. With this goal of comprehension in mind, Kestrel will be compared with industry standards of the Doublet Lattice method and Zona Technologies Zeus solutions.
