The constantly rising number of apartment buildings in lightweight mode of construction directed the focus to the sound insulation particularly concerning the low frequency range below 100 Hz. The aim to consider the extended frequency range down to 50 Hz to become an established part of standard regarding the sound insulation properties between dwellings is currently a vivid discussed topic in many European countries. Particularly in relation with lightweight mode of construction, it is discussed to apply the spectrum adaptation terms C_(50-3150), C_(tr,50-3150) and C_(I,50) additionally to the traditional single values according to ISO 717 to characterize the sound insulation including the critical low frequency range. Although these adaptation terms are objective parameters to regard the frequency range below 100 Hz, it is not sufficiently confirmed if a more reliable correlation with the residents' perceived sound insulation quality can be achieved if these values are added to the traditional single-values. Although it is necessary to consider more architectural parameters than only the single building element itself, the development effort to find applicable partition walls and ceilings is a first important step forward to improve the current situation regarding sound insulation. Some first ideas to improve sound insulation properties of lightweight building elements have been investigated in the laboratory. Measurements to compare the properties in the lab with the properties in situ influenced by interaction with the whole situation of the building show promising results to make lightweight building constructions applicable for the frequency range down to 50 Hz.
