What was that again? An assessment of potential noise induced hearing loss at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU)

A joint study project between the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland was conducted during 2004-2006. Its aim was to investigate the risk of hearing loss and develop a noise management program for music students and their teaching staff. A literature review revealed this project to be unique so far. Audiometric testing of a sample of students and assessments of a cross section of noise producing activities was conducted. With many students performing in multiple ensembles, practicing, attending lectures, gigs in venues and clubs, listening to personal stereos as part of their studies, it is apparent that music students are at a high risk of being exposed to the cumulative effects of noise, with some exposures exceeding statutory limits. Short- and long term management strategies were recommended. Short term recommendations include; audiometric testing of a sample of students and staff, education, portable acoustic treatments. Long term recommendations include; permanent acoustic treatment of practice and performance rooms, controlled room booking system, regular audiometric testing of exposed staff and audiometric testing of students at the beginning and end of their studies.
