Under the European Directive 2002/49/EC member states will be obliged to produce noise maps also of industrial activity sites. Assessment of environmental noise in this domain is often done by feeding a sound propagation model with the appropriate topographical information and with all data necessary to characterize, from an acoustics point-of-view, the pertaining noise sources in their respective state. In particular, this requires knowledge of sound power level spectrum and operating conditions of the sources. An important method to assess these quantities is to determine the noise emission's sound power level from measurements in the field. In doing so, existing standards are a natural choice to be used as a basis, but not for every source type an appropriate measurement method is available. In addition, the procedures described in the standards often do not aim specifically at determining exactly the data that is needed for noise mapping. This contribution gives a number of general hints and warnings that can be of use in obtaining better quality input data for noise mapping from measurements. It also points out some shortcomings, limitations, possible improvements and special aspects associated with the application and adaptation of standards to this task.
