Structural and Magnetic Characterization of New Oxides of Ruthenium and Osmium

Interest in oxides of ruthenium and osmium is motivated by the observation of many interesting properties including: catalytic activity, important electronic properties, and interesting magnetic phenomena. Several new oxides of ruthenium and osmium that are related to the perovskite or fluorite families along with compounds with unique structures have been synthesized as single crystals and studied structurally and magnetically. This talk will cover the development of new synthetic methods to prepare such oxides while highlighting the interesting magnetic and structural properties of some of these compounds including spin-flop magnetic behavior.
