The Valeo Electric Supercharger allows improved engine transient behavior and fuel consumption as well as lower NO_x emissions. The extra electric boosting enables an improvement in the air loop response time by an accelerated boost pressure build-up in both diesel and gasoline engines. This improved dynamic behavior can be converted into fuel consumption through extreme engine downsizing or/and downspeeding. Extreme downsizing and very long transmission gear ratios degrade vehicle driveability. The electric supercharger is a key enabler to overcome this issue and even provide far better dynamics. On Diesel engines, control of the NO_x emissions and the EGR system in transient operation will have to be addressed particularly with the new driving cycle regulation (WLTC, RDE). The boosting of the air loop in combination with the EGR in transient operation improves NO_x emissions while maintaining driveability. The presented benefits can be realized with an evolved 12V electrical architecture and are fully compliant with more capable, higher voltage architectures.
