Many applications of aerial remote sensing, such as assessing crop growth or water use, require information about crop ground cover. Established procedures for estimating ground cover have been developed for multispectral satellite imagery that rely on relationship between reflectance or digital counts (DC) in the red and near-infrared spectral wavelengths. Application of these procedures to estimate ground cover from multispectral aerial imagery has been limited due to the relatively small area contained within the imagery. In this study, a procedure for addressing this limitation is described. This procedure allows the use of the Perpendicular Vegetation Index (PVI) that can be evaluated from aerial imagery to estimate crop ground cover.
