The surface of counterparts, used in pneumatic cylinders are modified in order to screen the specific impact on friction wear by testing both flat samples and dynamic seals, made of thermoplastic polyurethane respectively. Based on these results selection criteria for optimized surface modifications of counterparts are determined. Contact parameters of seal to metal counterpart surfaces are defined by finite element analysis based on real application parameters and applied in model tests in order to rank by means of minimum friction and wear. Finally compatibility of model tests with real application will be discussed based on specific results.
