This paper concerns the barrier fluid flow characteristics of double mechanical seals in API 682 sealing arrangements. It presents how CFD can be used to represent and improve the flow characteristics through the internal cavities of typical seals. The next section presents flow results for several types of pumping devices. Finally two case histories are presented that demonstrate how the first two sections have been successfully applied to provide improved seal longevity in difficult sealing applications. The results demonstrate how it is possible to provide adequate head and flow requirements for double seals at clearances specified in the current version of API682.
