Comparison of physical and mechanical properties of wheat for feed ingredients derived from different planting locations

Physical and mechanical characteristics of wheat are important in the design of harvesting, handling,and processing equipment. So the aim of this study was carried out to measure and compare the moisture-dependent physical and mechanical properties of the same wheat in different place of origin. The wheat named ZH0UMAI16 was collected from Puyang county(PL), Kaifeng county (KF), and Lankao (LK) country ofHenan province, respectively. Five levels of moisture content with the range from 7.26 to 19% wet basis (w.b.) for the same variety from five planting locations above were considered. The average length, width, thickness, geometric mean diameter, thousand grain weigh, bulk and true density, angle of repose, static friction coefficient against different materials and hardness were studied. As the moisture content increased, the thousand-kernels weightincreased linearly from 30.68 to 38.92 g for PL, from 31.94 to 39.21 g for KF, from 30.14 to 39.15 g for LK. Bulk density was found to decrease linearly from 768.3 to 610.5 kg/m3 for PL, from 794.7 to 673.2kg/m3 for KF, from 816.8 to 672.4 kg/m3 for LK.Hardness Index of wheat decreased from 68.3 to 59.6 for PL, from 66.8 to 61.4 for KF, from 71.3 to 60.5 for LK. The angle of repose and static coefficients of friction increased for various surfaces, namely, galvanized iron, stainless, glass and plasticalso increased linearly with increasing moisture content. The physical and mechanical properties of wheat from the three place of origin had obvious differences. The results showed the regional differences should be considered in the feed industry.
