Three different light systems were installed in three pullet houses, all loaded and unloaded on the same dates with identical genetics and feed. The first house has standard 40A19 dimmable incandescent lamps mounted on the ceiling and alternately suspended about 1 m from the ceiling the length of the rows. The second had a dimmable Flexitube Lite (rope lighting) system mounted at the back of each pair of cages and 40A19 non-dimming lamps at the ceiling. The third replaced the 40A19 lamp system with adimmable compact fluorescent system suspended similar to those in the incandescent barn. The test followed two crops from the pullet houses to the layer barns. Energy consumption and bird performance were monitored in the pullet houses. Bird performancewas tracked in the layer barns to determine light system impact on lay quality and performance. Preliminary results from the pullet houses indicate that there were no significant differences in bird performance between the various light systems. The Flexitube plus incandescent light system used between 12 to 14% more energy than the incandescent house and about 82% more than the compact fluorescent house. The compact fluorescent system saved about 79% over the standard incandescent light system. Production results from the layer barns were not available yet.
