Two options for receiving round bales at a bioenergy plant were compared to the existing wood chip system. Option 1 envisions that round bales will be loaded into 16-bale shipping frames and delivered to the plant for size reduction. Option 2 envisions that the bales will be chopped at satellite storage locations and blown into 6.1-m dry freight ISO containers, a system that emulates the wood chip system. Delivered cost(farmgate + hauling/receiving) was 79.30/dry doller Mg for Option 1, 72.20 for Option 2, and 44.35 for the wood chip system. The wood chip cost has no production cost(payment to land owner) or storage cost. Round bales are a cleaner, more homogeneous, and lower moisture content feedstock, thus they are a higher value feedstock.
