This work is a preliminary investigation into direct extrusion as an alternative for making the large structured preforms required for commercial mPOF production. The central issue is the question of extruder die design for the continuous extrusion of mPOF preforms. Both the potential for, and numerical challenges of inverse die design as a key step along the road to commercialisation are examined.
