Red VCSEL Transceivers for Gigabit Data Transmission over Plastic Optical Fibre

We designed and characterized a gigabit fibre-optic transceiver for plastic optical fibre. The transceiver is based on highly reliable VCSEL devices emitting in red spectrum and is compatible with a wide variety of plastic optical fibre types. Stable operation of this device over a temperature range of-20°C to 60°C and gigabit transmission over 100m was successfully demonstrated. These results indicate that red VCSEL technology is becoming an attractive technology for consumer high-speed data communication.
