A method is described for either expanding or collapsing holes in microstructured polymer optical fibres. The hole collapse can completely seal the end of the fibre, or alternatively it can be used selectively to close only cladding holes. The method uses the localized application of heat to the end of the fibre, and despite its simplicity, is highly effective.
