The new European Superconducting Dipole hasbeen designed by EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement) in collaboration with several European Fusion Associations with the aim to perform tests of large superconducting conductors in high magnetic fields. In view of the relative complexity of the magnet, 3D numerical models of the assembly have been implemented in order to study, optimize and verify the requirements of the system. Several electromagnetic analyses have been performed with the purpose of studying the magnetic behavior of the system; the reliability of the results has been verified by comparing three different electromagnetic formulations. The obtained results have shown the feasibility of the system with respect to the adopted electromagnetic design criteria.
