A transversal flux actuator using the rail as secondary is used for boosting the transmissible tractive effort of a heavy duty railway locomotive. The actuator is required to generate a big attractive force and a small braking force. A3D magnetically non-linear FEM model, including vxB term for the moving actuator, is coupled with an external power electronic circuit simulation for calculation of forces and losses (program package MEGA). A lab demonstrator of reduced dimensions is used for experimental validation of the actuator performance. The chopped-mode power supply for variable excitation current is simulated with a coupled lumped parameter electric circuit. The influence of the chopped-voltage supply on the force output and the generated losses is investigated.
