Pyrroles are widespread in nature, and the pyrrole unit is also present in a large number of bioactive compounds and in synthetic intermediates useful for the preparation of new materials. Although a variety of synthetic approaches to substituted pyrroles are known, their preparation remains challenging, particularly regarding the synthesis of polysubstituted systems. One aspect of pyrrole synthesis that remains largely unexplored is the development of mild and efficient methods that provide an entry to fused pyrrole systems, many of which are biologically interesting.
