Direct, enantioselective and catalytic aldol additions of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) provide an easy access to polyhydroxylated aldol adducts, which are valuable intermediates in total syntheses of carbohydrates. Two strategies were developed to obtain these substances in optically pure form. Firstly, using of chiral BINOLato-titanium complexes or chiral mandelic acid titanium((IV) complexes we were able to isolate the aldol adducts with a high degree of stereo- as well as regioselectivity.
