Volcanostratigraphic profiles for the Azores region: A contribution for the EC8 Regulations and the characterization of volcanic rocks geomechanical behaviour

In the European Norm EN 1998-1:2004, that defines the disposals for seism-resistant structures projects, several stratigraphic profiles types have been defined. However, the geology of Azores Islands and the corresponding geologic profiles do not fit in this considered set. Thus, a set of typical profiles was suggested, which is considered to cover the majority of the situations observed in the Archipelago. The geologic formations have been classified in accordance with its seismic behavior in three categories: "hard", "intermediate" and " soft" formations, based on the classification proposed in 2001 by Forjaz et al. For each one of the groups and sub-groups defined, a more detailed characterization was made, taking in account not only the volcanic nature of the different materials as well as some of its geotechnical characteristics, such as the shear wave velocity and the SPT tests values.
