10.1 Introduction Biocidal 2-aryl-1,3-diones and their enol esters showing acaricidal and pre-and postemergence herbicidal activity were reported since the mid-1970's as exemplified by 3-hydroxy-2-arylindones from Union Carbide [1]. 3-Aryl-pyrrolidine-2,4-diones with similar biological properties were discovered more than 15 years later by Bayer scientists [2]. The herbicidal mechanism of action of this dichlorophenyl derivative was shown by Babczinski and Fischer [3] to be inhibition of the enzyme acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase.
