A non-chip microfluidic spontaneous sample introduction approach based on sweeping injection and capillary action was developed to achieve sample injection in the sub-100-pL range for high-speed capillary electrophoresis (HSCE). Using the novel approach, high separation efficiency up to 2,200,000 theoretical plates per meter was obtained in the CE separation of FITC-labeled amino acids with an effective separation length of 1.5cm and separation time of 6.5s.
