The Copenhagen Metro has been a turning point not only for Ansaldo, but also for the history of automatic, unmanned, transportation systems, while also achieving 24-hour service capability. The systems approach, on which the Metro design was based, was the key for developing a transportation system product that, having established a new standard of comfort, safety and reliability with fully unattended operation, can nevertheless be easily tailored to different needs. The key factors that identify the system product are: flexibility and low integration impacts. Today, after more than four years of successful operation and two major extensions, the City of Copenhagen is welcoming the opening of the Airport extension of the Metro and moving quickly towards the tendering phase of the new unattended operation City Ring Line. In the meantime, the Ansaldo Copenhagen-class automatic metro system has been chosen by four other cities as the best solution for their urban transportation problems. By minimising land take, infrastructure and O & M costs, its unique solutions have allowed Ansaldo to sign the automatic Metro contracts of Brescia, Rome line C, Thessaloniki and Milan line 5. The Copenhagen Project has also been a benchmark to demonstrate how a driverless system can face the needs of a growing Metro. The presentation describes also how the impact of the extension works were minimised and how revenue service and maintenance activities were continued, without affecting the operation.
