Differentially Expressed Lipids in Meibum of Dry Eye Patients: Post-menopausal Women vs Contact Lens Wearers

Statistical analysis of all peaks in direct infusion MS spectra data can systematically determine differentially expressed lipids in human meibum of dry eye, despite the presence of overlapping and isotopic peaks. Differentially expressed meibum lipids for the two groups of dry eye patients (vs control): 1. Common: (1) Species of two types of diesters and very long chain wax esters down-regulated. 2. Differen: (1) Only for dry eye patients of postmenopausal women: Up-regulated triacylglycerols; (2) Only for dry eye patients of contact lens wearers: Up-regulated short-chain saturated cholesteryl esters; (3) Other difference: Down-regulated species tend to be more unsaturated in contact lens wearers.
