There is a rapidly increasing scientific and also general interest in the analysis of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) aerosol. However, most e-cigarette studies published so far utilize conventional offline technologies (e.g. gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry; GC-MS), which are sensitive and selective but also very time consuming and require sample preparation, so that puff-by-puff analysis is impossible. Here, we introduce a novel experimental setup that consists of a sophisticated interface for ecigarette mainstream aerosol sampling directly from the e-cigarette's mouth-piece, as well as for sampling of exhaled breath following e-cigarette use and a Proton Transfer Reaction - Mass Spectrometry (PTRMS) instrument [1] for accurate online quantification.
