Eukaryotic mRNA undergoes a variety of processing steps, diversifying the transcriptome and allowing for temporal and spatial regulation of gene expression. These processes are often guided by RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) which recognize and bind RNAs through RNA-binding domains (RBDs). However, with the large variety of RNAs in mammalian cells RBPs are often required to recognize very diverse targets. As most known RBDs only recognizing short RNA stretches, RBP modularity has emerged as an important functional aspect facilitating specificity and affinity and allows recognition of diverse RNA targets.
