摘要

Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) resulting from nuclear detonation or accident has been a topic of concern for many decades. Recent terrorist threats to unleash widespread damage using a device capable of dispersing radioactive material on the general population have only accelerated the need to reassess the state of radiobiological research and focus more efforts on making sure we are prepared to handle such crises. One need would be the ability to determine the severity of overall radiation exposure and the specific organ stress/damage, which would ultimately serve as a guide to treatment options.
