Currently a number of analytical techniques have been used for studying plant metabolomics. However, there is still a need to develop metabolome profiling techniques for mapping the spatial distribution of the metabolomes in a plant. To achieve high spatial resolution, a sensitive technique that can detect a large number of metabolites from a small size of sample is required. In this work, we describe our research efforts on developing a chemical isotope labeling (CIL) LC-MS method for quantitative profiling of the metabolome differences in different regions of a plant. We used a ginseng root as an example to demonstrate the potential of this technique for mapping the metabolomes at different segments of a root.
