Gold (I) stabilized ylides can be isolated in the gas phase through electrospray of gold (I) ylide salts. These ylides can then be disassociated by CID to provide gold (I) stabilized carbene complexes which when allowed to react with olefins give metathesis and cyclopropanation products. Kinetics for the reactions were recorded and substituent effects observed. Gold (I) carbenes can also be formed in the gas phase by a reaction of gold (I) ions and diazoacetates. A loss of N_2 followed by a spontanious Wolff rearrangement and CO loss leads to stable alkoxy carbenes that do not react with olefins.
