The comparative LC-MS method developed was used to assess the similarities and differences in composition and relative amount, between 5 phospholipid classes found in the extracts of the control, high and low dose brains of the P80 rats. Absolute quantification would require the standards to be derived from the same source as the samples, ie the closer the fatty acid standards of the standards to the samples, the more exact the measured amounts would be. The HPLC-MS method allows for the simultaneous analysis of 5 phospholipid classes. The advantage of this method over the more traditional TLC or HPLC-UV methods, is that it is less labour intensive, has good reproducibility, increased sensitivity and specificity.
