Mass spectrometry has been established as one of the most powerful approaches in the selective detection of explosives and other hazardous compounds in complicated matrices, owing to its intrinsic sensitivity and specificity enhanced by MS/MS and ion/molecule reactions. With the advent of ambient desorption sampling techniques, in-situ mass spectrometric detection of explosives absorbed on surfaces has been enabled. Instrument miniaturization, especially of the ion trap mass spectrometer, and the coupling of ambient ionization techniques to portable instruments represent a current trend largely driven by the desire for in-situ applications. Accordingly, developments of new ion/molecule reactions and ionization/sampling methods, suitable for in-situ applications and easy to integrate into miniaturized instruments, are required.
