Phospholipids play important roles in biology because of their unique physical properties and functions in membrane structures. They are also used as excipients in many pharmaceuticals to formulate final products. There is a need to develop rapid and accurate analytical methods to characterize their related species under various conditions. POPC(1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3- phosphocholine), a common constituent in biological membranes, is a zwitterionic lipid and often used as an anti-agglomeration agent in pharmaceuticals. Its production process can result in degradants and impurities that have to be fully characterized. In this presentation, we explore the use of linear ion trap-orbitrap hybrid mass spectrometer capable of high resolution LC/MSn analysis to rapidly identify POPC related unknowns.
