Testing Content in Subject Classification-driven Information

Recently, we began implementing a method for delivering technical documentation called subject classification. This method uses a controlled set of terms called a taxonomy to describe what the information is about (its "subject," hence "subject classification"). Users then retrieve the information they are looking for by selecting the applicable subjects from an interface that organizes the subjects into categories that allow meaningful combinations of subjects to be used for retrieval. We found that this method of delivering information required much more rigorous content testing than our current information delivery methods and business processes allowed for. This paper provides a brief summary of the approach we took on subject classification and describes our test experiences.
