We conducted 19 pilot interviews and a preliminary online survey of authors, examining their conceptualization of the editorial process, including the definition of editing, the tenor of their past editorial relationships, their preferred mode of editing, and the factors that lead them to accept or reject an editorial comment. We also examined whether this information differed if the author was a nonnative speaker of English. From this information, we created a preliminary structural model that diagrams the variables at work when an author decides whether or not to adopt an editorial suggestion. At the conference, we will report the final, comprehensive results and structural model.
