The Japan Arc has an abundance of bentonite resources. So far, production from domestic mines has been almost enough to fully meet the demands of Japanese industry. Bentonite deposits in the Japan Arc are embedded entirely in Miocene to Pliocene sedimentary rocks accumulated in extensive back arc basins, and are largely divided into the following two types in terms of their field occurrences: stratified deposits and irregular-shaped massive deposits.
