With 135,000 individual organizations and 110 billion in assets, California non-profits represent a large potential market for solar energy installations. Placing a small PV installation on each of the 31,000 churches, synagogues, mosques or temples in California alone would create a 300MW market. Public and private non-profit schools and universities provide likely sites for larger systems. A summer camp in California has made the decision to install an approximately lOOkW PV system, this paper relates the story of how that decision was made and how public policy can be used to duplicate this decision throughout the state and nation.
