摘要

Polymeric materials are essential to the well-being and high standard of living enjoyed by most citizens of the world. Because of concern for the environment, there is increasing interest in generating both polymers and polymer additives from renewable biosources. Isosorbide is a diether diol available from the fermentation of glucose. It may be converted to unsaturated esters by treatment with plant-oil-derived fatty acids. These compounds may serve as a base for the development of a variety of polymer additives including environmentally-friendly, non-halogen phosphorus flame retardants. These esters and derivatives may be characterized using thermal and spectroscopic methods.
